| Meeting in Antlers, Oklahoma on April 12th, at 12:00 noon at the library was a success!! There was a large attendance with an abundance of questions and a large amount of input for the people of the Lost Cherokee. The question of quantum of blood was asked, the council answered that this is important; but think of the past--- John Ross was 1/8 Cherokee, Ounann Parker’s mother was a full blooded white woman that went to her grave saying she was Indian. There is Sequoyah, who identified the Cherokee symbols, whose father was white, Stand Waite part white, on and on. The important thing is to ask yourself and your friends--- why don’t I know my language, how do I say Hello (o si yo) in Cherokee, or come in (ga li tso-de e-hiyv-ha), when was the last time I participated in my ceremonies. Without knowing your language or your culture, you are not Cherokee. A tribe is its members that practice its ways for traditional and social survival. Everything is going in a positive way toward federal recognition. The genealogy and family tree is making tremendous head way. We have had so much input and support from our people. It makes you proud to see how far we have traveled. We wished that the process of recognition were not so complicated. We received bad news from two other tribes that are seeking recognition and they are the Steilacoom tribe located in Steilacoom, Washington and Juaneno Band of Indians of Santa Ana, California. These two tribes were denied federal recognition. The council voted for an award to be given out yearly for the outstanding Cherokee member of the year. This award will be named The Joe Casey Spiritual Award. Permission was asked and granted from wife Pat Casey. Mr. Joe Casey was one of our Elders and was a strong leader in our tribe. The council wants to thank Diane Chiles for the fund raising committee she headed. Diane made tickets, called many people, and promoted this cause with great enthusiasm. Diane is a very strong promoter for our people. We thank you so much, Diane, you are well cherished. Councilman Buddy Whiteley and wife Barbara Whiteley donated a Lost Cherokee jacket for Diane’s fundraiser, with seal and winners name to be placed on jacket. Thank you, Buddy and Barbara. Michael Chase Hocutt, 3 year old grandson of Headman Don Harness and Kathy Harness, drew the winning name of Billy J. Farris for the Lost Cherokee jacket. The Elder Board had a lot of ideas to be examined. Linda Bagnall and sister, Ruth, are pursuing some of these ideas and will be reporting back to the council. Thank you, Cherokee brothers and sisters of Antlers, Oklahoma, for a wonderful afternoon!! |
