"The Cherokee Nation:  A History"
Meeting in Antlers, Oklahoma on April 12th, at 12:00 noon at the library was a success!!
There was a large attendance with an abundance of questions and a large amount of input for the people of the Lost
Cherokee. The question of quantum of blood was asked, the council answered that this is important; but think of
the past--- John Ross was 1/8 Cherokee, Ounann Parker’s mother was a full blooded white woman that went to
her grave saying she was Indian. There is Sequoyah, who identified the Cherokee symbols, whose father was
white, Stand Waite part white, on and on. The important thing is to ask yourself and your friends--- why don’t I
know my language, how do I say Hello (o si yo) in Cherokee, or come in (ga li tso-de e-hiyv-ha), when was the
last time I participated in my ceremonies.  Without knowing your language or your culture, you are not Cherokee.
A tribe is its members that practice its ways for traditional and social survival.

Everything is going in a positive way toward federal recognition. The genealogy and family tree is making
tremendous head way. We have had so much input and support from our people. It makes you proud to see how
far we have traveled. We wished that the process of recognition were not so complicated.  We received bad news
from two other tribes that are seeking recognition and they are the Steilacoom tribe located in Steilacoom,
Washington and Juaneno Band of Indians of Santa Ana, California. These two tribes were denied federal
recognition.
The council voted for an award to be given out yearly for the outstanding Cherokee member of the year.  This
award will be named The Joe Casey Spiritual Award. Permission was asked and granted from wife Pat Casey. Mr.
Joe Casey was one of our Elders and was a strong leader in our tribe.
The council wants to thank Diane Chiles for the fund raising committee she headed.  Diane made tickets, called
many people, and promoted this cause with great enthusiasm. Diane is a very strong promoter for our people. We
thank you so much, Diane, you are well cherished.
Councilman Buddy Whiteley and wife Barbara Whiteley donated a Lost Cherokee jacket for Diane’s fundraiser,
with seal and winners name to be placed on jacket. Thank you, Buddy and Barbara. Michael Chase Hocutt, 3 year
old grandson of Headman Don Harness and Kathy Harness, drew the winning name of Billy J. Farris for the Lost
Cherokee jacket.
The Elder Board had a lot of ideas to be examined. Linda Bagnall and sister, Ruth, are pursuing some of these
ideas and will be reporting back to the council.
Thank you, Cherokee brothers and sisters of Antlers, Oklahoma, for a wonderful afternoon!!

Update August 22nd, 2008

There are still those out there who take no activity in trying to get our tribe recognized, but pursue
every waking moment trying to kill the Lost Cherokee's chance at recognition.  Case in point is the
letter we we're forwarded today from a disgruntled applicant from several years ago named Doyle
Turner.  Although his files were never certified Lost Cherokee, in a fit of greed for power he is still
to this day trying to shut down our tribe and our people's chances at recognition.  The information in
Doyle Turner's e-mail sent today is totally bogus and uniformed.  Please disregard any
correspondence you might get from this person as his only purpose is to try and dissolve our group.
For those who would like to know more please read our rebuttal below.

Here is Mr. Turner's first paragraph.

"The report from the Stafford firm is simply stating there were no records to audit. This was the first
auditor’s report which did not favor the defendants and their attorney talked the judge into another
auditor appointed by the Judge. In the second report (which we view as another full year of
deliberate delay) of Connor/Sartain there are a couple of misleading statements made by Bo Conner
in that Dub Maxwell was in charge of operations when in fact Mr. Curtis Smith was the registered
treasurer until their reappointments in 2005 then Mr. Smith became the President. Many illusions
have been created by Mr. Bishop to shed blame on everyone else when in fact it is he that has been
the head “Ram-Rod” as you will see in some of the future information that we are going to expose
on the Lost Cherokee. Mr. Conner’s remarks show him to be ignorant of the facts or there are other
reasons for him to make such remarks."

This information from Doyle Turner seems to be nothing more than a mindless rant.  The Stafford
Firm is our accountant, and his letter attached in Mr. Turner's document is just a statement
accompanying a random balance sheet.  We fail to see in anyway were it could possibly be relevant.
Regarding the Connor and Sartain audit, this has all been discussed and dismissed before.  Read the
letter for yourselves and see what it says.  It says that "Mr. Bishop, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Smith
were very cooperative with us throughout the engagement" and that no audit could be done because
"Dub Maxwell was responsible for the operation of the organization during the time period [the audit
was to cover] and is no longer a part of the organization."  We really don't know what Mr. Turner is
trying to get at here.

The next part of his letter cites several deficiencies we had in our first submission to the BIA.  After
our first submission we got an assistance letter from the BIA showling us the spots that needed
work.  We have been diligently working everyday to correct the errors (many of which as cited by
Mr. Turner were made by former members Dub Maxwell and Jim Davis) and have historians,
genealogists and consultants guiding our way to a proper submission that will bring a wonderful
review for us in the next submission (hopefully by December of this year.  So his last attached letter
of review is just that, a review, a piece of advice from the BIA on how we could do better on our
next submission.  Mr. Turner is trying to put us all in a bad light and stop our recognition.  We hope
most of you have not had to deal with his nasty letters, and if you feel like it please e-mail back your
support and we will get your comments posted on the website.  So thank you all very much and we
look forward to hearing from you soon!
