Cherokees on the Arkansas River
As we inch ever closer to federal recognition, there are still several people out there
who would seem to want nothing more for our group to fail in its effort to be federally
recognized. As we have stated before on this website, several groups are trying to
discredit us, and are constantly making public and private claims against our legitimacy
and our ethics.
Today, for the first time on this site, and in response to several instances of “secret”
correspondences, we will begin to name names and place the blame squarely where it
should be placed. Namely, on the backs of all those who are using every resource
available to them to stop the Federal Recognition of The Cherokees on the Arkansas
River.
We have been called thieves and liars. We have been accused of taking funds from the
tribe. Yet, let me assure you of what funnels the largest amount away from this group:
lawsuits. The first of the “splinter” groups to begin with litigation was the so-called
“Oversight Committee” in Clinton, AR. This self-appointed group of past councilmen
removed themselves from the group after Leon Stockton and Kay Steele and a few
others wanted to take authority of the group. This is a group that holds no meetings,
lives solely to discredit us, and haven’t even updated their website in over a year.
Doyle Turner is another disgruntled member of this group. He being upset over the
submission of 731 names to the BIA for the first TA review. His name was not on this
list because his file was not complete at the time. The first TA review is not, and
represents in no way, the final group of names to be submitted to the BIA. A TA review
is just that, a review, it is assistance from the federal government to help with the
format of submission before a petition is placed on active status. These people are just
trying to stir up our community in order to achieve power. Which is hurting our chance
for federal recognition worse, I ask you? Our hard work, every day, certifying your files
and preparing for the 2nd review, or childlike name calling and frivolous lawsuits which
funnel away money from the tribe?
The second “splinter” group is formed of former headman Dub Maxwell and his mates
Philip Hubbard, Jim Davis, Doug Cotter and Susan Jarrett in Dover, AR. Those are the
only members of the group, now claiming to be the Lost Cherokee. They have no access
to member’s files and have no way to petition the BIA for recognition. Please do not
send any information to the Dover office and ignore any mentions of elections on their
website. They have nothing to do with The Lost Cherokee of Arkansas and Missouri and
only became disgruntled and left the group after greed entered the situation when a
deceased member donated a sum of money to the Corporation. Again, Which is hurting
our chance for federal recognition worse? Our hard work, every day, certifying your
files and preparing for the 2nd review, or childlike name calling and frivolous lawsuits
which funnel away money from the tribe?
Finally comes our newest member on the “splinter” group list, The Arkansas
Chickamauga cherokee or the so-called Jr. Councilmen of Conway, AR. This group
comprised of Conway socialites became junior council members when appointed by
current headman Cliff Bishop. They too became upset and left The Lost Cherokee over
the same greed. Wanting to set up a business with the money from the deceased
member mentioned above they became angry when this was not approved, and were
removed from their positions. Again their website spits forth some of the same venom
as those aforementioned and should be avoided. They have no purpose but to try and
stop the bid for federal recognition. Again, Which is hurting our chance for federal
recognition worse? Our hard work, every day, certifying your files and preparing for
the 2nd review, or childlike name calling and frivolous lawsuits which funnel away
money from the tribe?
We would love nothing more than to have everyone on the same page, working towards
the same goal. However, greed, and a hunger for power, seem to have diverted a few of
those away from our ultimate goal of getting help for our people. These groups only
represent a small number of members. There are thousands of us who stand together
in the federal recognition goal, and have no time for back and forth bickering, name
calling and purposeless litigation. Please ignore any e-mails, websites, or other
correspondence from the above mentioned groups as there is only one Lost Cherokee of
Arkansas and Missouri Incorporated. We are not yet a tribe, so the tribal laws cannot
affect us, but as we work harder, we soon will be! Stay strong-contact us with any
questions-and remember….WE WILL HIDE NO MORE!!!!!!!
